Hoagie is, in many ways, a typical nerdy kid. He loves comic books, video games, and the Yipper trading card game. He manages to exist within both the nerdy scientist circle of the KND and the world of a scrappy field operative. Perhaps as a result, Hoagie does put some social distance between himself and other nerds, seeming to consider himself just a little bit better than they are. He has a tendancy to be a "well, actually" kind of guy, but he also respects his teammates and fellow operatives. He also loves food and seems to have a bottomless appetite, which has helped the team in their battles against Gramma Stuffum.
Hoagie is infamous for his puns and one-liners, which always fall flat. His teammates might enjoy his sense of humor more than they want to admit, though.
Outside of his engineering and piloting, Hoagie also loves adventure. He is a prominent bootlegger of soda, which is illegal for anyone under the age of 13 to consume. Bootlegging isn't his only side hustle. He also freelances as a detective, though it's unclear if anyone is actually seeking his help. Before joining the KND, Hoagie was a school hall monitor, and his detective work may be a way of holding onto this feeling of power and the thrill of crime solving.
While he is known for bringing levity to situations, he is also able to be very serious and level-headed when necessary. He is good at giving commands and taking action when missions get dangerous.
Hoagie brags about heroic acts that never happened and tries to build himself up as a fearless, cunning fighter. Underneath this pompousness, Hoagie struggles with his self confidence. In operation C.A.K.E.D-F.O.U.R, he addresses this insecurity head-on.
Hoagie is a loyal and devoted friend who will always be there for his teammates when push comes to shove.
Hoagie and Nigel go way back, having been close friends since Kindergarten. They enjoy working on projects together and have very strong mutual respect for each other. Nigel puts his faith into Hoagie even when it results in Hoagie creating lackluster mission strategies. It is clear that they trust each other with their lives, even when Hoagie annoys the whole team with his antics.
Kuki and Hoagie enjoy making each other laugh. Together, their playfulness makes them the heart of the team. In season one, they rescue an abandoned baby skunk and act as it's adoptive parents. When Kuki and Hoagie are together, they often squabble.
Hoagie doesn't always respect Kuki's intelligence or ability, but Kuki always proves him wrong and puts him in his place.
Hoagie and Wally are undisputable best friends. Hoagie was close with Wally before they joined the KND, and they continue to spend a lot of their time together. Wally works with Hoagie on robotics projects, plays videogames with him, and shares his interest in the Yipper TCG.
All that being said, they still take jabs at each other sometimes. Wally pokes fun at Hoagie for being a nerd and sometimes a coward, and Hoagie insults Wally's intelligence and plays tricks on him. They have the kind of relationship where none of this is taken very seriously.
Hoagie and Abby have a warm friendship, even though Abby sometimes pretends to find Hoagie annoying. They often go on adventures together and support each other unconditionally. Abby enjoys light-heartedly making fun of Hoagie and is quick to complain about his lousy jokes, though it is implied that she secretly finds them funny.
In the series finale, it is revealed that Hoagie and Abby get married as adults, so it's safe to say Abby has a soft spot for the team comedian.
Hoagie lives with his mother Betty, his younger brother Tommy and sometimes his Grandma Lydia. His father is absent, and it is never revealed whether this is due to divorce, death or both. His father had a huge impact on Hoagie and he remembers him fondly.
Hoagie's mother is high-strung but caring. She works under Kuki's mom in the accounting department of Mr. Boss' company. She is often frustrated by Hoagie's antics, but clearly loves and supports him. Hoagie's Grandma is downright mean and cruel to everyone around her.
She usually lives in an assisted living community, but is often seen at the Gilligan family house. She does not respect her Grandkids, never getting their names right and often hitting them.
Hoagie's most signifcant family relationship is with his little brother Tommy. Tommy begins the series as a doting younger sibling who just wants to hang out with his "cool older brother", which Hoagie finds irritating. Hoagie does not start out as a great role model, telling his brother to get lost and stop bothering him. Over the course of the series, Tommy goes through a winding character arc. He helps save the KND moonbase in operation E.N.D and is referred to enter KND basic training. After basic training, Tommy becomes Numbuh T and joins Sector V, where he helps defeat a scheme by Father. To defeat Father, he has to remove himself from the KND, and is unable to return. After this turning point, Hoagie expresses more pride and affection for Tommy. After leaving the KND, Tommy creates his own lone-wolf vigilante persona known as "The Tommy". Hoagie and Tommy's relationship remains that of a cocky older sibiling and a pesky younger sibling, even after they make progress.
Joe Balooka: Joe was once Hoagie's partner on the school safety patrol. Now, Joe's disgraced and bitter towards Hoagie, who still has a soft spot for him.
Numbuh 42: Numbuh 42 is a scientist from Sector X who's friends with Hoagie. Numbuh 42 is Hoagie's source for rare Yipper cards, though the means through which Numbuh 42 aquires the cards is not always on the up-and-up. He is shown to have developed new, rapidly growing treehouse seeds.
The Kid: The Kid is another local pilot, who used to frequent the same hobby shop as Hoagie. The curmudgeonly shop owner pitted Hoagie and The Kid against each other, resulting in an epic dogfight. Once the two realized that they had been tricked, they resolved their differences and went their separate ways.
